The project has been undertaken with Hall Black Douglas Architects, based in Northern Ireland. The provision of outdoor spaces that heal is key to the concept, and the public spaces and private gardens at the back of the building provide secure, protective and comforting spaces for the patients. The building has been designed on a domestic scale using natural materials wherever possible.

Interior view

“People with mental health problems in the Southern Trust area will benefit from this modern, spacious and attractive building…the unit has strategic importance, not only for the Southern Trust area, but for Northern Ireland as a whole.”

Colm Donaghy, Hospital Chief Executive

The site is overlooked by a nearby village, posing issues for planning and security. A great deal of consultation with the local community was undertaken before designing the facility.
