A Different View and David Morley Architects worked on an early masterplan study to reimagine the future of the Victoria Gallery and Museum (VGM) – an Alfred Waterhouse designed Grade II listed building which became a gallery and museum in 2008 to celebrate Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year.

As a direct result of this ambitious vision, the VGM’s place within the cultural ecology of Liverpool has been re-defined and welcomed with enormous excitement. The role of culture in the lives of the student population is set to be transformed and participation put at the centre of everything VGM will do.

Cultural Experience:

  • Market understanding – the building’s place in the City and broader cultural/ heritage landscape.
  • Gap analysis for learning and community engagement programmes, including public engagement with research and widening participation.
  • An outline visitor experience / interpretation plan.

Operations and Funding

  • Review of operational resilience.
  • Identification of potential grants and external funders.
  • Options for commercialisation, aligned to heritage conservation responsibilities.

The Victoria Building is an icon for the University of Liverpool being the building that coined the term ‘Red Brick University’. Our work has uncovered a compelling vision for the future to better connect collections, academia, students and the local community for a changing world.
