Surrey County Council appointed David Morley Architects and A Different View to develop proposals for the 5-hectare Basingstoke Canal Centre site with the principal objective of increasing visitor numbers and revenue generation via improved facilities, better branding and marketing of the site.

Informed by site analysis, historical research, client and stakeholder consultations and market research carried out by A Different View, a range of fully costed architectural and landscape design options were explored for a new visitor attraction interlinked with a new visitor centre comprising café, shop and education / event rooms, and a new landscaped campsite complete with all amenities and a new canoe centre.
The vision was developed with the Client by ADV and DMA working in close collaboration and took inspiration from the heritage of the site as one of the UK’s oldest canals completed in 1794 to connect Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge via the Wey Navigation.
A Different View supported the feasibility study by producing visitor number forecasts and high level income and expenditure estimates in order to advise on the financial viability of the scheme.
