David Morley Architects collaborated with the University of Warwick to design a new ‘Sports Hub’ to build upon and further enhance the university’s national and international reputation by delivering an ‘inspirational offer’ of high quality facilities and programmes. The new Sports Hub is driving participation in sport and activity while also promoting health and wellness among students and staff.

The scale of the 13,650 m² building is sensitively articulated into three parts with the large volume of the sports hall and swimming hall linked to an entrance pavilion by a triple height atrium that opens up views to all the main activity areas. The new complex provides opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities with links to other facilities via a network of paths, cycle ways, and activity areas.

“They (DMA) thought from first principles and were just brilliant to work with. Going the extra mile came normally to them. I would have no hesitation in recommending them and would be happy to talk to future potential clients.”

Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Director of Sport & Active Communities, Warwick University

The building facilities include:

  • Main sports hall sized to 16 badminton court layout
  • Flexible 12 lane 25m pool space
  • Climbing wall and bouldering facility
  • Fitness and Strength and conditioning suite
  • Combat hall
  • Squash courts
  • Flexible studio spaces

The University had a vision to be the most active campus in the UK and therefore the Sport and Wellness facilities needed to meet this aspiration. The concept was to create a building where activity can be seen without taking part and has good views to the surrounding landscape.
