The facilities are supported by a strength and conditioning suite. There was significant consultation with stakeholders including Sport England who funded the project. The building shape is derived from the volumetric requirements of the sports taking place within.

“The restrained bulk of the two sports buildings contributes to the campus-scape by forming a gateway and providing harmony with, and a counter-point to, the adjacent residential buildings. The Brunel sports centre slots comfortably into the practice’s oeuvre of confident and well-crafted sport buildings.”

The curved roof is a catenary arch supported on wishbone steels, halving the foundations required. The Indoor Athletics Centre is placed at the gateway to the site, becoming the interface between the students and the local community.
