As the first stage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games came to a close last night, and the anticipation for the Paralympic Games builds, we can’t help but reminisce about our contribution to the London 2012 Olympics, 12 years ago.
We’re proud to have designed the Water Polo Arena for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a temporary yet iconic venue that stood prominently at the main gateway to the Olympic Park. The unique shape of the arena, inspired by the form of a huge splash from a diving figure, mirrored the dynamic energy of the adjacent Aquatics Centre.
Winning ‘Sustainable Building of the Year’ in 2013, the Water Polo Arena’s concept was driven by the desire to make the building using a method where all of the components could be efficiently re-used, re-cycled and indeed many components were pre-cycled taken from the existing supply chain of temporary structures. Our design reflected the Olympic Delivery Authority’s strategy to leave a minimal environmental footprint, a commitment embraced in Paris and set to guide future Games.
As we celebrate the spirit of the Games in Paris, we look back with pride on our role in shaping the experience for athletes and fans alike in London.
Here’s to the enduring legacy of sustainable design in the Olympics!
