Can you breathe new life into an old mill?
Mills Transformed, recently published by John Hudson Publishing, delves into the regeneration of historic mills across northern England. The author Neil Horsley showcases the restoration of over thirty heritage buildings, including the iconic Lister Mills in Bradford – featured on the book’s front cover.
A Grade II listed complex, Lister Mills has been a focal point of regeneration in Bradford, led by developers Urban Splash, since 2006. As part of this transformation, Velvet Mill – the second phase of the project – was converted by David Morley Architects into 190 apartments, with an innovative two-story rooftop extension. The ground floor now provides 6,500 sq. ft. of flexible community and commercial space.
As this year’s UK City of Culture, we are proud to shine a light on Bradford and the success of urban regeneration projects such as Lister Mills.
In answer to the question, yes, with the right team of committed individuals to navigate the complexities of heritage assets, we can re-imagine spaces to breathe new life and love into long-neglected buildings to serve the modern community.
