Nestled in Aberystwyth, Wales, the National Library of Wales stands as a beacon of cultural and historical significance, safeguarding centuries of heritage and serving as a vibrant hub for knowledge, research, and exploration. The Library is a Grade II* Listed Building and the surrounding landscape has been evaluated within the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales as Grade II*.

David Morley Architects, together with A Different View, Colour Landscape Architects and Glyndwr Cost Consultants were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study intended to form the basis future investment to improve the overall visitor experience of the Library in order to cement it as a key destination in Ceredigion and Mid-Wales.
A key focus was creating a more welcoming and accessible arrival experience, strengthening connections between the Library’s historic building, its collections and the exceptional surrounding landscape. The proposals sought to encourage visitors to explore, linger and engage with the site in new and meaningful ways.

Informed by much discussion and collaboration with the libraries staff and volunteer’s, along with reference to audience research, we considered the vision for transforming the visitor experience between indoor and outdoor areas holistically whilst suggesting proposals that could be implemented incrementally as funds became available. This was to ensure progress without losing sight of the overarching goal of providing a high quality and memorable welcome and experience.
This integrated approach informed a series of site-specific proposals, from digital interpretation and landscape opportunities to new ways of bringing more of the Library’s collections into view.
