The proposal includes both new and refurbished facilities, which form a new ‘quad’ within the university precinct. The project was delivered on time within a tight time scale. A key aspect of the project is its significance as a flagship development both for the University and the City of Liverpool.

“David Morley Architects have produced a design that is proving highly successful in terms of the core goals of the project – a state of the art research facility that establishes integration and collaboration within the biological sciences research community. The building has also made a strong impact on the city, transforming the northeast corner of the precinct and a key gateway site into a memorable landmark.”

Dave King, 'Architecture Today'

The site is located at the north-east corner of the precinct, opposite a major gateway route into the city centre. The radial design responds to the corner, establishing a strong presence and identity. A contemporary cladding material – terra cotta rainscreen – reminiscent of Liverpool sandstone, has been used on the street-side elevation.
