Virginia Woolf College, University of Kent
A residential development at the University of Kent campus comprising 544 rooms (standard and postgraduate student accommodation) and a 500 seat lecture theatre with supporting seminar rooms. The residential development was designed with a timber frame and natural servicing to ensure an energy efficient and sustainable building. Off-site manufactured bathroom pods were installed, saving time and cost. Bespoke furniture was designed for the bedrooms offering flexibility to the students in order to customise their bedrooms. The building is structured around a courtyard, providing a traditional collegiate feel.
The unusually shaped oval lecture theatre allows for the seating to be staggered maximising views from all seats. Potential acoustic issues have been overcome using ceiling and wall baffles. It also houses a foyer exhibition space and six seminar rooms, two with a collapsible wall creating one large space.
