Keynes College, University of Kent

The second phase of 3 projects at the University of Kent, this project comprised an extension to Keynes College of 495 new build residences (including town houses, single occupancy flats and an accessible flat) and was completed in 2011, just 22 months after the design team were commissioned.

The student accommodation is broken down into a series of blocks with clusters of two 8 person flats at each level arranged either side of a central stair. Within each cluster block the social/ dining area creates a key focal point when approaching the building whilst the layout has been configured to maximise natural light and views out across the campus. Full height corner windows overlook the external communal spaces to provide excellent visual connectivity between the inside and outside spaces whilst helping to create a more secure environment.

This scheme achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.
