Centre for Two St James
David Morley Architects were good at transferring our ideas into practice, and the result was we got exactly what we wanted. Without exception everyone is delighted.”
The St James Centre is home to a 300 seat auditorium as well as smaller meeting rooms, a book shop, a creche and flexible multi-use space. The centre, on the church site, is used extensively by a large variety of groups. The focus is provided by an internal ‘street’ which provides space for the different groups to interact. The auditorium is cooled using an entirely silent rock store cooling mechanism, used for the first time in the UK. This building was paid for through funds raised through the parish, and therefore their involvement in the concept was key. A considerable amount of public consultation was undertaken at the outset of this project, involving the parish and wider community. The rock store cooling provided for the auditorium cost less than conventional air conditioning to install, run and maintain.
