Gold Hill Baptist Church opens for the community

On the weekend of September 25-26 around 1400 people from the local community in Chalfont St Peter were shown around the new facility and treated to a warm welcome by the church family.

The Hub was designed to create a new community facility at the heart of village whilst also being a home for the Gold Hill Baptist Church family. The church had outgrown its previous facility and there was a need for a flexible community space which can be used for seasonal and special events.

The new hub has space to accommodate a 750-person gathering as well as smaller spaces for normal community and church activities such as offices, meeting rooms and extendable community rooms. A considerable amount of public consultation was undertaken at the outset of this project, involving the parish and wider community.

The design is centred around a large double height hall and foyer with vaulted ceilings, and features a circulation space running the length and height of the building along one side.  Surrounding the main hall are supporting spaces that have been carefully positioned to suit the sloping site. The materials palette has been selected to provide an attractive, modern and robust building that sits comfortably with the surrounding context. The use of brick follows the historic use in the village and is enhanced with the use of a dark projecting brick plinth at low level and alternating projecting brick coursing at the upper level, offering a counterpoint to the vertical window slots and contrasting with the gold roof cladding that crowns the building.
