Brierfield Mill Open Day and new name announced

Brierfield Mill opened its doors last Saturday 30th November.

All were welcome for a free tour of this Victorian Grade II listed mill. Project team members including Chris Roberts and Jennifer Juritz from David Morley Architects were on hand to answer questions about the Master Plan receiving a positive response from local residents and businesses.

The event was organised by PEARL, the pioneering joint venture company combining Pendle Borough Council with Barnfield Investment Properties. The Brierfield Mill has been renamed ‘north light’ in reference to the buildings architectural heritage. North lights were a key feature of northern weaving mills with sloping roofs and north-facing roof lights bringing natural daylight into the working areas whilst shielding workers from sun glare. On this project David Morley Architects are exploring a contemporary development of a north light where the south-facing section of roof is used to gather solar energy – a strategy successfully deployed at the King’s Cross Construction Skills Centre in London.
